How We Do It
Karat Place, Inc. pr0vides an up to two year three phase program in a transitional-living environment. “Homeless” is defined as those who cannot return or choose not to return home after they are released. Pre-release referral through the chaplain, counselor, program administrator or parole officer is necessary.
The errants (maximum 14) 21 years and older, will come to Karat Place directly from the correctional facility (SCDC or Jail East or West TN) upon release.

  • Phase I - Rehabilitation 1 - 3 Months

  • Intake, orientation, children visitation (brought to center within 2 weeks of mother's arrival)
  • Relapse Prevention (crime, alcohol and drugs), Conflict
  • Resolution, Goal-setting, GED
  • Parenting Skills, Communication Skills, Resume Writing, Esteem Building, Job Readiness/Job Search/ Job Placement
  • Mental health counseling


  • Phase II - Reintergratign 6 -12 months On and Off-site Group Sessions/Classes

  • Money-Management, Homemaking Skills, Continued Goal-setting, Relapse Prevention, Parenting Skills
  • Conflict Resolution and Entrepreneurial Skills
  • Contractual job procurement

Phase III - Readiness. 1 - 3 Months

  • Money-Management and Goal-setting continued
  • Counseling, Housing Procurement, Aftercare and Tracking
  • Recreational and community service activities are part of the program.
